BYU to Host Inaugural Cougar 7′s Invitational (w/ Updated Schedule)
Provo, UT–Two-time national champion BYU hosts the inaugural Cougars 7′s Invitational September 29th.
The U of U, SUU, USU, WSU, UVU & Northern Colorado come to BYU’s Helaman Field to take on the host Cougars of BYU with the first game set to kick off at 10am.
With Rugby 7′s being a newly included sport in the upcoming 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, the abbreviated version of the full 15-man game is garnering wider popularity in the US and throughout the world.
BYU ventured to Logan, UT last week and entered two teams in the Utah State 7′s tournament two weeks ago. Both BYU teams ended the tournament undefeated being led by USA Eagle Shaun Davies and All Americans Ryan Roundy, Seki Kofe and Ray Forrester.
Recently returned missionaries Ryan Blaser and Lelann Latu also showed well.
With the growing interest in rugby 7′s BYU head coach David Smyth says his program is looking forward to using the fall 7′s season as a development tool.
“We have a number of players this year who could use some competitive game time,” he said, “So we’re looking forward to not only developing our sevens program but to also use this as a chance to develop our team as well.”
It’s expected BYU will enter two teams to the invitational along with Utah and UVU doing the same.
Admission is $2 for students and $3 for non-students. The Cougar 7′s Invitational will be held on Helaman Field just South of Lavell Edwards Stadium. Parking is available in the South parking of the stadium.
Following the Cougar 7′s Invitational BYU is slated to enter the Rocky Mountains 7′s Tournament later in October in order to qualify for the USA Rugby Collegiate 7′s Championships to be held at Texas A&M November 30th-December 1st.
The first game starts at 10am with games kicked-off approximately every 20 minutes.

How long is this tournament?
One day mate.1st game is at 10.00am.7 minute per half.
I am very excited about this tournerment.I am looking forward to be there.
Dang it all! I didn’t want to like 7′s and BYU not participating was a good excuse.
Now, not only do the Cougars field teams, they’re hosting a tourney? And one last chance to see Davies in Blue/White? And only $3 admission?
I might have to learn to enjoy it.
Boo! Why college teams only allowed?
This makes me want to move to Utah. I love in the South where rugby is a communist sport.
Typo live in the south. Haha
Just heard from a friend on BYU Grounds that they will move in the temporary bleachers for this tourney. Good to know; I didn’t want to bring the fam if we would have to watch from ground level.
When will World Rugby Shop have BYU gear to purchase ?
It was a very fun tournament. All teams played hard. It would’ve been nice to include Dixie State in the article but it was not. They did well also. Great job all the schools who participated!
If I had only kept up with checking this website I would have known about this and I would have been there for sure.
Can anyone tell me if Lasike will be playing next season or is he fully committed to football?
